Aldo Festante rounded a great weekend at the Hungaroring by taking his maiden win
in the GT Cup Open Europe, at the wheel of the Porsche 911 Cup by Ombra Racing.
The young Italian, who took the two poles and was third in Race 1, mastered perfectly
Race 2 and his additional handicap to sign a great success. “This time we brought it
home”, he commented, “It wasn’t easy, as they kept pressing me from behind, the
heat was terrible today, and there was again a safety-car period, but it worked out
well and we are starting well the championship.”
It was again an all=Porsche podium with Vincent Beltoise-Niki Leutwiler (PZ Oberer
Zürichsee by TFT) taking third ahead of yesterday’s winner Jaume Font (Baporo
Motorsport). The Spaniard repeated success in Am ahead of Albert Estraguès, who had
a superb drive in the NM Racing Team Transam Euro and took fourth overall and the
Baporo Audi of Díaz Varela-Cerqueda.
Third in Pro-Am, behind the two leading Porsches, was the Team Virage Aston Martin
of Philippe Valenza and local hero Robert Hefler.
THE RACE – Having posted again the pole position, Aldo Festante keeps the advantage
at the start and pulls away in front of Beltoise, Font, Valenza, Diaz-Varela,
Blanchemain, Silva, Estraguès and Szigo. By lap 5, Festante has a margin of 1.5
seconds, still not enough to cover up the extra handicap for being a Silver driver
racing alone, even if reduced from 10 to 5 seconds by the Stewards.
In lap 7, Estraguès manages to pass Silva for 6th in what had been the nicest battle
until then. The young Spaniard then caught the Audi of Díaz-Varela, which he passes.
In lap 9, Blanchemain is forced to the pits by technical issues, shortly before Silva
stops along the track. The safety-car has to intervene and gaps are wiped out.
At restart, Festante keeps the advantage and assertively rebuilds the same advantage
over Beltoise and Font. Soon after, in lap 14, start the pit stop phase, with Festante
trying to stretch his gap. He will succeed, as after all driver changes, he keeps the
lead and futher extends his gap on Leutwiler and Font up to 6 seconds by lap 20.
Behind, it is again Estraguès with the Transam Euro putting the show, as he attacks
Hefler for fourth. He will pass in lap 21. The last feat to be reported is the failed
attack of Cerqueda on Hefler for 5th
.
