Hyundai Motorsport customer results round-up bulletin

  • Paraguayan driver Diego Dominguez scored victory in the opening round of the South American CODASUR championship, at the Rally de la Tierra Colorada in Argentina
  • Rok Turk and co-driver Blanka Kacin started their new partnership with Hyundai Slovenia with second overall at the Rally Kumrovec
  • The Veloster N TCR won both races on its debut in the TC America series, with Mason Filippi victorious in both encounters at the Circuit of the Americas.

The 2019 season continues to gather steam, with further international and national championships beginning on both the rally stage and race track. Recent weeks have seen Hyundai Motorsport customers make their seasonal debuts around world, including the first event of the new partnership between Rok Turk and Hyundai Slovenia.

Winning start in South America

In South America Diego Dominguez began his 2019 season with his Hyundai Paraguay supported i20 R5 in Argentina. The driver, and co-driver Hector Nunes, took the start of the Rally de la Tierra Colorada (March 1-3), the opening round of the CODASUR championship that spans the continent.

The pair had a consistent run on the first day of the rally, winning two stages to reach the overnight halt in a close second place. Their strong run continued in the morning, but more importantly on the gravel roads, their pace was complemented by the reliability of the i20 R5. So, as their rivals fell away through incidents and the rough conditions the Paraguayan crew emerged as clear leaders. Their advantage meant they could manage the lead for the remaining stages, eventually winning overall by nearly 40 seconds for a near-perfect start to the new campaign.

Rok Turk takes second on his Hyundai i20 R5 debut

Double Slovenian national champion Rok Turk began his association with Hyundai Slovenia and customer team Friulmotor at the Rally Kumrovec (March 1-2). Turk and co-driver Blanka Kacin made a brilliant start to their 2019 season, which is set to include campaigns in both the Croatian and Slovenian national series. The pair scored the fastest time on the opening Super Special, but had their victory challenge dented on the second run through the test. A small mistake resulted in a broken left-rear wheel and the resulting delay dropped them – temporarily – out of the top five.

The pair climbed back to second place after winning the first stage on the morning, and then retained the position through to the finish of the rally.

Spanish crew score victory in Galician event

Ahead of a third season in the Spanish tarmac championship with his i20 R5 Iván Ares used the Rally de A Coruña (March 1-2) as a warm-up event for the second consecutive year. Already a winner at the Galician rally last year, Ares and co-driver José Pintor retained their crown, winning six of the eight stages to take victory over 30 seconds at the head of an entry led by six R5 crews.

Ares and Pintor will once more represent Hyundai España in the national series, which begins later this month with the Rally Sierra Morena.

German season starts with podium for i20 R5 crew

Hermann Gassner Jr. took his family team’s brand new i20 R5 chassis for its first competitive entry at the Saarland-Pfalz Rallye (March 8-9), the first round of the domestic season in Germany. Despite having made only a handful of starts in an i20 R5 previously he was able to set good times from the off, placing third on all three of the stages run on the opening evening. The record was all the more impressive as the day included two passes of a 26km run – the longest of the rally – sandwiching a Super Special in St. Wendel.

He continued his consistent run on the second day of the rally, never giving up third position as he set times in the top four on every stage of the rally. The performance was rewarded with third position overall, and a spot on the podium after pulling nearly two minutes clear of the R5 crew who finished in fourth place.
Nucita takes victory in Pavia show event

The Hyundai i20 R5 proved to be the class of the cars gathered for the Rally Show Pavia (March 2-3), with Andrea Nucita taking the Bernini Rally prepared car to overall victory. Nucita, a regular in Bernini’s car, and twice a winner of an Italian national rally in the i20 R5, set the fastest times on the first four stages of the weekend, only relenting in his domination on the two passes of the final test, easing to victory.

Veloster N TCR completes double victory on TC America debut

The Veloster N TCR made a sensational debut in the new TC America series at opening round of the championship at the Circuit of the Americas (March 2-3). Driver Mason Filippi won both races at the Texas track in a TFB Performance entered car.

He had to come from 12th on the grid in the opening 40-minute race but was able to drive through the pack to win by nine seconds, also claiming fastest lap for the car. That put Filippi on pole position for Sunday’s Race 2. From the head of the field he led every lap, though closely chased by those immediately behind to complete the sweep of the weekend’s races.

Hyundai Motorsport Team Director Andrea Adamo said: “More and more national and international rally seasons are now beginning around the world, and with them more Hyundai i20 R5 crews are making their 2019 debuts with the car. In South America Diego Dominguez made an excellent start with victory in Argentina on gravel stages. Our customers have also taken a collection of strong results on tarmac in the recent events in Italy, Spain, Germany and Croatia. Rok Turk’s new partnership with Hyundai Slovenia shows the high calibre of drivers who continue to be attracted to the i20 R5 by its performance and reliability. The double victory for the Veloster N TCR in America is, of course, a fantastic result and continues to show the strength of the Hyundai TCR platform ahead of the beginning of the circuit racing season in Europe.”
