Hyundai Motorsport customer results round-up bulletin

  • Craig Breen and Andrea Crugnola finished 1-2 in their Hyundai i20 R5 on Rallye Sanremo after a consistently strong performance on the tarmac stages
  • i30 N TCR teams prepared for the TCR Italy season at the opening weekend of the Coppa Italia Turismo at Mugello, with Mauro Guastamacchia taking a pair of second places overall
  • TCR Australia driver Brad Shiels scored three top-ten finishes at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama Circuit on his most successful weekend yet at the wheel of the i30 N TCR.

Hyundai i20 R5 crews scored a 1-2 finish in the latest round of the Italian national rally championship after an excellent showing in wet conditions on Rallye Sanremo. Elsewhere in Italy i30 N TCR customers prepared for the TCR Italy season with podiums in the Coppa Italia Turismo. Finally, on the TCR category’s debut at the famous Mount Panorama circuit i30 N TCR drivers were able to move through the order to record strong results – including three top-tens for a local driver.

i20 R5 crews take 1-2 finish after consistent Sanremo run

Craig Breen and Andrea Crugnola formed a Hyundai i20 R5 1-2 on Rallye Sanremo (April 10-11). Breen, who was running the event as part of his preparation for the Croatia rally later this month, won three stages on his way to overall victory. Hyundai Rally Team Italia driver Crugnola was consistent throughout the rally to claim his first podium of the season in his Hyundai Italia-backed entry. He and co-driver Pietro Elia Ometto were joint-fastest on the first and last tests, and were second quickest on a further four occasions on an event where crews had to negotiate several slippery sections after rain. The finish gave them a strong points’ finish towards their national championship campaign.

A trio of i20 R5 crews on the entry list was completed by Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior Driver Oliver Solberg and co-driver Aaron Johnston. They were running in the top five before they slid wide through a corner and damaged the left-rear corner of the car, forcing them from the event.
Hyundai Espanã-supported crews begin new national rally season

Three i20 R5 crews started the new Spanish Super-Championship season at the Rallye Sierra Morena (April 8-10). Of the three Hyundai Espanã-supported teams it was Francisco López and co-driver Borja Odriozola who took away the best overall result in eighth.

However, there was also very strong pace from Surhayen Pernía who set the best times on the Qualification and Shakedown runs for the event and was in second overall at the end of the first day of action. On the opening stage of the following day though, he was forced to retire after damaging the car going off the road.

Podium finishes as team prepare for TCR Italy campaign

Several i30 N TCR customer teams and drivers used the first event of the Coppa Italia Turismo season at Mugello (April 9-11) as extra preparation for their upcoming TCR Italy campaigns. Mauro Guastamacchia and Adriano Visdomini finished on the overall podium in the opening race of the weekend – held in slippery conditions – to take first and second in the TCR class. For Visdomini the result came after battling up the order after starting only 11th in a field that mixed TCR cars in with machinery from other Touring Car categories.

Guastamacchia repeated his result in Race 2 in his Aggressive Team-entered car, coming from the fourth row on the partially reversed grid up to second overall. From the back of the grid after an early retirement in Race 1 Ettore Carminati climbed up to eighth by the chequered flag – one place ahead of Visdomini in the final standings.

Top-ten results as i30 N TCR teams show pace on Bathurst debut

i30 N TCR driver Brad Shiels scored a trio of top-tens on TCR Australia’s debut outing at the famous Mount Panorama Circuit at Bathurst (April 2-4). The Tilton Racing driver qualified a highly impressive fifth for his home event on the calendar, and held a place among the top group throughout the weekend – finishing seventh, eighth and seventh across the three races for his best event in the championship so far.

The HMO Customer Racing team grew to three cars for the weekend, with Duvashen Padayachee joining the squad for his first competitive starts in the TCR category. The team’s meeting started poorly, unfortunately, with their drivers being caught out by a red flag in qualifying which kept them from starting any higher than 15th. However, across the three races the handling of the i30 N TCR through the technical, wall-lined sections of the circuit allowed all three to move up the order. The racing ended with Nathan Morcom and Josh Buchan finishing Race 3 ninth and tenth - split by less than a second. Padayachee closed out his event in 12th.

Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Manager Andrew Johns said: “Our customers have enjoyed more strong results in recent weekends. In Italy and Spain teams supported by national Hyundai subsidiaries have shown good pace – which is very positive in the first few rounds of the season. Of course, on Rallye Sanremo both Craig Breen and Andrea Crugnola took excellent individual finishes and once again proved that the i20 R5 can compete for victories in some very competitive series. For Crugnola and the Hyundai Italia Rally Team it was a superb victory that fully shows the potential of the team Hyundai Italia has put together for this season and for Breen it was a promising performance ahead of his WRC entry in Croatia. Also preparing for future events with podiums were our i30 N TCR teams in Italy, while our customers in Australia showed good pace on one of the country’s most famous circuits.”
