Hyundai Motorsport customer results round-up bulletin

  • i20 R5 driver Umberto Scandola took a fantastic overall victory on Rally Adriatico, the opening round of the Italian Gravel Rally Championship.
  • A win apiece for Max Hart and defending champion Lewis Kent saw i30 N TCR drivers sweep the opening weekend of the new TCR UK season at Silverstone
  • Hayden Paddon scored a victory in a rare competitive outing in an i30 N TCR, winning Race 3 of the TCR New Zealand meeting, where three Hyundai Motorsport customers stood on the podium.

A mix of experienced drivers and new Hyundai Motorsport customers have taken excellent results in recent weeks, with victories in two different national series in Italy for i20 R5 drivers, as well as strong results on Spanish gravel. Meanwhile, new rallying customers made promising starts to their seasons in Turkey, Denmark and North Cyprus. Customers also took wins in both TCR UK and TCR New Zealand with the i30 N TCR on weekends that showcased the superb potential of the car amid competitive grids.

Superb performance ends with overall Rally Adriatico victory

SA Motorsport Italia driver Umberto Scandola led throughout Rally Adriatico (April 23-24) to take overall victory on the opening round of the national gravel championship. With co-driver Guido D’Amore he established a lead by going fastest on each of the three tests in the opening loop. From there he was able to extend his advantage with consistently strong times – including a further two stage wins – to reach the end of the event with a 17-second margin over his nearest challenger.

Early in the event his teammate Giacomo Costenaro had also been in contention. The pair was first and second after the first two stages. However, a mistake on the second loop of the day put Costenaro out of contention. However, the final overall top five still included two i20 R5 crews, with Luigi Ricci taking fifth in his Bernini Rally-prepared entry.

Class victory to start Italian WRC campaign

Luca Rossetti got his Italian WRC Championship campaign off to a strong start as he finished second overall on Rallye Elba (April 16-17) and won the R5 class. Part of a two-car i20 R5 entry from the BRC Racing Team Rossetti and co-driver Manuel Fenoli were fastest overall once on the stages, and topped the R5 runners on all but the final of the five runs that made up the event.

In the final standings the pair was less than ten seconds behind the winning crew – sharing a WRC car – but more than 20 seconds clear in class. ‘Pedro’ – driving the team’s second i20 R5 – finished 12th overall after a consistent run.

Junior Driver shows great pace on first rally start in North America

Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Junior Driver Josh McErlean took an overall podium from the Olympus Rally (April 24-25). Making his first rally start in North America the Irish driver finished as the best R5 driver on the Washington state event, more than three minutes ahead of his nearest competitor. In total McErlean and co-driver Keaton Williams were the fastest R5 crew on 10 of the 11 stages completed on the rally in their PCRS-prepared car. Even more impressively they also set the fastest time overall on SS7 – the second longest of the weekend – the first stage win for the i20 R5 in the USA.

Hyundai España crew take top-five from Superchampionship gravel opener

Iván Ares finished fifth overall on the Rallye Tierras Altas de Lorca (April 23-24), the first gravel round of this year’s Spanish Superchampionship. The tarmac specialist was on the pace throughout the event on his way to collect points for fourth place among the national championship runners. In a second Hyundai España-supported i20 R5 Surhayen Pernía finished eighth overall – sixth of those crews registered for the Superchampionship.

Crews make Hyundai debuts as Turkish season begins

Two drivers made their first competitive starts with the i20 R5 at the ESOK Rally (April 23-25) to start the national championship season in Turkey. Mustafa Cakal set four times good enough for the top five in class and finished eighth overall – a promising sixth place of the R5 runners on the tarmac stages.

The second Hyundai on the event was driven by Erkan Gürel, who came away with a top ten in class.

Strong weekend ends with stage win in Denmark

Simon Vallentin Hansen quickly improved across his first start in an R5 since 2018 on Rally Himmerland (April 17). After finishing tenth fastest on the opener he moved up the timesheets during the 10-stage competition to complete the weekend in impressive fashion by going fastest on the final test. The time also lifted him into sixth overall on the tarmac event that started the Danish national championship season.

North Cyprus crew show good pace in first i20 R5 outing

Rauf Denktaş took fourth place from the Hamitköy Ralli Sprint (April 17) – the opening round of the North Cyprus Rally Sprint series, and his debut in his brand new i20 R5.  On an event decided by each crew’s fastest run on the single stage Denktaş and co-driver Mehmet Mişon finished just over a second off the podium places.
i30 N TCR customers dominate TCR UK opener

Max Hart and Lewis Kent took a win apiece in their i30 N TCR – sweeping the opening weekend of the TCR UK series on the Silverstone International circuit (April 25). Qualifying bought a superb Hyundai 1-2-3 at the front of the field – Maximum Motorsport’s Hart taking pole on his first event racing as a Hyundai Motorsport customer, ahead of fellow i30 N TCR debutant Bradley Kent and defending champion Lewis Kent. In the race Hart and Lewis Kent were able to pull away in first and second, Hart also setting the fastest lap to further signal the pace of the Hyundai at the front of the field.

After sharing the third row on the partially reversed grid Lewis Kent and Hart both quickly made their way back to the front – Lewis taking only a lap to move from fifth to the lead, with Hart close behind. In a reverse of the Race 1 result it was Kent who took victory in his Essex & Kent Motorsport-run entry. An excellent weekend for i30 N TCR drivers at the track was completed by Bradley Kent – younger brother of Lewis – who climbed from the rear of the grid after a Race 1 puncture to take fourth place.

Former WRC driver takes TCR New Zealand race win

i30 N TCR drivers stood on the podium in all three TCR New Zealand races at Highlands (April 23-24). Three Hyundai Motorsport customers were on the grid for the winner-take-all event, including former WRC man Hayden Paddon. He qualified on pole at the head of a Hyundai 1-2-3 completed by Jaden Ransley and Gene Rollinson.

Rollinson was the best of the trio in the first two contests. He finished second in both contests. After falling as far down as fifth in the worst of the damp track conditions early on he battled back up the order, eventually taking second on the final lap. In Race 2 he kept the pressure on the leader for the full 30-minute duration to cross the line just half a second behind at the chequered flag. Paddon returned to the front in the finale, powering through the field to take victory. He was shadowed throughout by Ransley to seal an i30 N TCR 1-2, split by only two-tenth of a second at the end of the race.

Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Manager Andrew Johns said: “Our customers have taken a number of strong results in recent weeks. In Italy Umberto Scandola and Luca Rossetti have both taken victories in two different national series, on different surfaces, with Hyundai i20 R5 prepared by two different teams. That consistency, despite all the variables, is a great indication of the performance of the car. So, too, is the fact that drivers in Turkey, Denmark and North Cyprus have been able to step into i20 R5 and immediately challenge for top times, and that Customer Racing Junior Driver Josh McErlean claimed the first stage win for the car in the USA. You can see the same sought-after combination of great performance and drivability in the i30 N TCR, with Max Hart and Hayden Paddon both winning in their first sprint race weekends with the car – in TCR UK and TCR New Zealand respectively – with Hyundai Motorsport customers among those to beat in both series.”
