Hyundai Veloster N ETCR to hit the Daytona high banks in high-speed demonstration

  • The Hyundai Veloster N ETCR will perform a high-speed demonstration run at Daytona International Speedway during the Rolex 24 at Daytona weekend
  • In the hands of development driver Augusto Farfus the car will take to the circuit ahead of the first race of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season on Friday, January 29
  • The run will be an early opportunity for fans to see the superb performance of the Veloster N ETCR which is the first car to run with the standard e-kit components.
The Hyundai Veloster N ETCR will perform a high-speed demonstration as part of the Rolex 24 at Daytona weekend at Daytona International Speedway.

With test and development driver Augusto Farfus at the wheel the car will run on the 3.56 mile track used for the 24-hour race including the iconic 31° banked oval turns. The event will showcase the superb performance of the ETCR category, and more specifically the Veloster N ETCR, in public for the first time.

Designed to deliver a peak power output of 500kw (670hp) the Veloster N ETCR is the first electric race car built by Hyundai Motorsport. Work on the project started in late 2018, and began testing on-track in September 2019 with a prototype design before the final specification e-kit comprised of battery pack, motors, DC-DC converter and gearbox was installed last year. The milestone run at Daytona continues the progress of the project, following the announcement of Hyundai Motorsport’s commitment to PURE ETCR at the series’ launch in the centre of Copenhagen in October.

Since then the team have extensively tested with the car, working together with the ETCR technical partners and suppliers, in order to maximize the performance of the chassis, as well as the electric motors and powertrain that are standard across the ETCR class.

After private testing in Italy in the final months of 2020 the demonstration at Daytona will give fans a first glimpse of the potential of the new category in action. The trip to the United States will also take the Veloster N ETCR into a hugely important market for electric vehicles, and one where Hyundai is already very active in motorsport.

The ETCR demonstration will take place on Friday, January 29 – shortly before the start of the first race of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season. The Hyundai America-supported Bryan Herta Autosport outfit swept the series’ titles in 2020 – winning the drivers’, teams’ and manufacturers’ crowns after a dominant year with the Veloster N TCR.

In 2021 they start a fresh chapter, giving the all-new Elantra N TCR its race debut with two cars entered for the four hour race. They will be joined by a large number of Veloster N TCR run by privateer teams in the premier series for the TCR category in the US.

Hyundai Motorsport Team Principal Andrea Adamo said: “The demonstration run at Daytona International Speedway is a great opportunity for those behind the ETCR regulations and for us at to show the excellent performance the Veloster N ETCR is capable of.  The Daytona track is one of the most famous in the world and the 24 Hours there is one of the biggest racing weekends of the year, so we’re honoured to have been invited to showcase the car in front of the fans and race teams who will be there. The sight of the Veloster N ETCR at pace on the circuit is sure to build interest in the category, and in electric racing in general in a very important automotive and motorsport market. The whole Daytona event will be very important to Hyundai Motorsport. As well as the ETCR demo, our customers Bryan Herta Autosport will also give a race debut to the Elantra N TCR as defending champions after a very successful 2020 season, and Hyundai America will be celebrating the Elantra’s recent US Car of the Year win. On top of all of this we will have other customers racing with the Veloster N TCR in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race, where Hyundai Motorsport-built cars make up a majority of the TCR class.”

Augusto Farfus said: “Being invited to run a demonstration at Daytona International Speedway is a big opportunity to show the Veloster N ETCR to the world. Through the testing we have already completed we know it is very capable of putting on a good display, and the track at Daytona should let us show both the superb acceleration and the top speed. I think being able to see the car will create some great interest in the car, and the category, at a big event for motorsport in the US, and internationally. Of course, if what we can do at Daytona impresses the fans, they have to remember that there is a still a lot more development work to do, and even more performance possible before the first competitive events.”
