Andrea Adamo and Gabriele Tarquini on 2018 FIA WTCR Prize Giving Ceremony

  • Following the final races of the season at the Guia Circuit in Macau Gabriele Tarquini was presented with the FIA WTCR winner’s trophy at a ceremony at the Macau Tower
  • For the Italian it marked the successful conclusion to a year’s worth of hard work by all involved in the team
  • i30 N TCR customers finished first and second in the FIA WTCR teams’ championship*, confirming the quality of the car produced by Hyundai Motorsport.
Following a season of closely fought racing, and a championship battle that raged until the final day of competition, Gabriele Tarquini was presented with the 2018 FIA World Touring Car Cup drivers’ trophy at an awards ceremony at the Macau Tower on Sunday, November 18. The event also saw the top team, i30 N TCR customer YMRacing collect their trophy as well as those of the top drivers and riders from the other races that made up part of the Macau Grand Prix weekend.

Following the trophy presentations both Gabriele Tarquini, i30 N TCR winning driver from the 2018 FIA WTCR season*, and Andrea Adamo, Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Deputy General Manager summarized their feelings at the close of the season.

How does it feel to finally have your hands on the FIA WTCR drivers‘ trophy?
Tarquini: “There are times I thought I would never get my hands on the title – even during this weekend. It was a really great feeling to be able to call myself the driver’s champion of the FIA World Touring Car Cup – the first winner of course. However, even though it was the drivers’ title it was a team effort for the whole season with the BRC Racing Team, my teammate Norbert Michelisz and the support from Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing. There were a lot more people than just me who worked towards the title victory.”

You have said in the past that the i30 N TCR is like your child after you served as the main development driver. How would you describe it after winning the FIA WTCR title?
Tarquini: “I would say this is my child grown up! I’ve always been very proud to have been part of the development team for the i30 N TCR, and even more proud to be able to say the car has now won the FIA WTCR title. More than that in its first year of racing the car has been the best in the championship, with all four i30 N TCR drivers winning races and team finishing first and second in the championship. It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to speak about the car as a championship winner, and I am sure more will follow.”

There is no manufacturers’ championship in the FIA WTCR, but to have built the winning car in both the drivers’ and teams’ standings must be a massive achievement for Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing.
Adamo: “The Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing department, the cars we produce and the support we offer can only be judged on the results that our customers are able to take. So to have i30 N TCR team first and second in the FIA WTCR standings is clear evidence about the quality of the entire package we can offer. The department was created to sell cars, and to increase the profile of Hyundai in motorsport by bringing the manufacturer name into more series. We have done that in TCR, taking Hyundai into circuit racing for the first time, and we have put the car in the highest profile position possible – at the front.”

About the Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing department
Hyundai Motorsport GmbH established its Customer Racing department in September 2015 with the aim of enhancing Hyundai’s motorsport image around the world – in parallel to its WRC program. Following its debut the i20 R5 quickly proved popular with teams and drivers across Europe. The car is designed so that both professional and amateur drivers can compete in the full range of international, regional and national championships where R5-specification designs are eligible. In February 2017 the Hyundai Motorsport announced their second Customer Racing project, a circuit racer designed to the TCR regulations. After extensive testing the i30 N TCR scored a sensational debut win in China. In the hands of privateer teams Hyundai Motorsport-built cars have now claimed victory in several championships, including national rally series in France and Spain the teams’ and drivers’ titles from the inaugural FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) season*.
