Racer Products reveal two-car TCR New Zealand team

The inaugural TCR New Zealand Championship has been bolstered by the launch of a two-car Hyundai i30N campaign from Racer Products.

The team will be run by experienced motorsport manager Mark Petch and lead driver Gene Rollinson, with the latest specification Hyundai i30N purchased from TCR Europe team Target Competition as raced by British dual-TCR champion Josh Files.

The team’s new car and spares package including a complete spare body shell is due to arrive in New Zealand mid-October.

Petch brought in the team’s first Hyundai TCR car earlier this year to compete in selected endurance events. That car has been sold to Christchurch businessman Rhys Gould, who will partner Rollinson in all four of the SIERDC South Island three-hour endurance races later this year.

At this stage Gould has committed to the endurance races only, with the team on the lookout for a young driver to fill the seat for the full TCR New Zealand Championship.

The car has already had plenty of race miles after Rollinson and 2018/19 New Zealand Formula Ford Champion Jordan Michels won their class in the final two rounds of the North Island NIERDC endurance series.

The inaugural TCR New Zealand Championship will kick off at Highlands Motorsport Park on January 17-19.

Gene Rollinson
TCR New Zealand driver, Racer Products

"I am really looking forward to driving with Rhys as he has shown in testing that he is fast and fiercely competitive even though he has done no actual racing, he has done a lot of laps in his Mustangs at all of the South Island circuits racing against the stopwatch,” said Gene Rollinson.

“I am thrilled to be able to get so much more seat time in the run up to the TCR New Zealand Championship as I am going to have to be right on top of my game against the top Aussies that are slated to be coming over for our inaugural championship.

“Five race weekends back-to-back is going to be a tough ask for anybody, so I need as much seat time as possible leading up to the first race at Highlands in January.”

Rhys Gould
TCR New Zealand driver, Racer Products

“I could not have picked a better driver than Gene to learn from,” said Rhys Gould.

“He is not only a past outright New Zealand Endurance Champion, but in between his daily work at Racer Products he spends many days at Hampton Downs helping aspiring racing drivers get up to speed, so to have Gene in my corner will be a huge help over the next four races.

“I am not sure that I will have the time to do the full TCR New Zealand Championship, so the team is looking to fill my seat with a suitable driver who can do the car justice in these short sharp sprint races while I concentrate on the long distance races next year.

“Hopefully we can find a young driver for the TCR New Zealand Championship who can also drive with me in the endurance series, that would be great from my point of view.”

Mark Petch
Team Principal, Racer Products

“We are excited about doing the four South Island Endurance races with Rhys and Gene in our original TCR car, now resplendent in the Signature Homes livery,” said Mark Petch.

“We have given the car a ‘birthday’ over the last couple of months in preparation for the mileage that it will do over its next 12 hours of racing, so hopefully the car will prove to be just as reliable as it has been to date.

“I spent some time with Target Competition in Italy as well as visiting Hyundai Motorsport in Germany, so I now have a much better idea of how everything works, and what we need to do as a team going forward.”
