Nestor Girolami secures Honda Race 1 TCR victory at Sandown

Nestor Girolami was unflappable and unbeatable as the Argentinian import claimed his first carsales TCR Australia Series win at Sandown Park.

The factory Honda driver started from pole position on a slimy track, as most drivers left the grid with slick front tyres and wets on the back, and avoided the early bumping to build an unbeatable lead of more than two seconds.

Will Brown battled up to second with his Hyundai i30N, overtaking the second Honda of John Martin, but ran out of time and had to settle for the runner-up spot ahead of youngster Jordan Cox who took his first podium with an Alfa Romeo.

QUOTES

Nestor Girolami
Driver, Wall Racing Honda

“It’s a pleasure to be here, but free practice means nothing,” said Nestor Girolami.

“I’m happy because the car is very balanced. We are in a position to think for tomorrow. Unfortunately, tomorrow looks like raining, so you need to set up the car for raining, set up my brain for rain too!

“It’s a really nice circuit, especially Turn 6. I’m really excited to be here in Australia. I always wanted to come here, so I’m glad to have the opportunity.”

Will Brown
Driver, HMO Customer Racing Hyundai

"We qualified fourth, it wasn't my best work, but off the start, I was straight up to second," said Will Brown.

"I lost a few positions mid-race, but I got them back, and that was probably due to thinking about the championship, rather than blocking.

"I chased down Nestor, but couldn't quite get past him, so we'll have another crack tomorrow."

Jordan Cox
Driver, Garry Rogers Motorsport Alfa

“It was hairy. Those wet tyres just went away,” said Jordan Cox.

“Probably after Lap 7 or 8, it all turned to rubbish and it was the survival of the fittest. It felt like the tread blocks were peeling off the tyre after every lap.

“Once we lost the gap to the front two, it was just a case of brining it home and being safe.”
