Hyundai Germany backed i30 N TCR team score TCR Germany title double

  • i30 N TCR driver Max Hesse clinched the TCR Germany title with victory in the final race of the season at Sachsenring
  • Hesse and teammate Théo Coicaud also secured the teams’ title for the Hyundai Germany supported Hyundai Team Engstler squad
  • Hari Proczyk finished second in the final drivers’ standings, completing a championship 1-2 for Hyundai Motorsport customers at the end of a superb season.

30 N TCR driver Max Hesse won the final race of the TCR Germany season at the Sachsenring, clinching the title to cap off a fantastic season with the Hyundai Germany supported Hyundai Team Engstler squad in the championship.

The victory was his fifth maximum score of the season – the most of any driver in the series – and kept him clear of his closest challengers, led by Hari Proczyk in his own i30 N TCR. By finishing second in the race the Austrian secured the runner-up spot in the championship to give Hyundai customers the top two spots in the 2019 points. He ended the season with three pole positions – another benchmark for the field - and two race victories.

Both Hyundai Team Engstler and Proczyk’s HP Racing International squad were strong throughout the season, starting with the opening round of the championship at Oschersleben where Proczyk and Hesse shared the front row of the grid, and Hesse started the year with a pair of podiums.

However, it was in the second half of the season when the i30 N TCR drivers found the form that was to put them at the top of the series.

Hesse claimed a first win, both in the series and with the Hyundai, during the Zandvoort weekend in August and then – just a week later – claimed maximum championship points at the Nürburgring, where Hyundai WRC driver Thierry Neuville gave a race-winning cameo as a guest entrant in a third car run by the Engstler team.

Hesse took the championship lead after a remarkable weekend at Hockenheim where i30 N TCR drivers swept the podium in both races, with a win apiece for him and Proczyk. However, the superb performance left the i30 N TCR teams carrying maximum compensation weight for the finale weekend at the Sachsenring. Hesse’s lead shrank after a tough first race at the title-deciding weekend where he could only finish in eighth, but he delivered a mature performance in Race 2 – patiently making his way from fifth on the grid to the lead to make sure he was in position to claim the championship in dramatic fashion.

His Hyundai Team Engstler teammate Théo Coicaud finished the finale in sixth, ensuring the outfit of the teams’ championship title to match Hesse’s triumph.

Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Senior Sales Associate Andrew Johns said: “First and second in the TCR Germany drivers’ standings and the teams’ title is an incredible achievement for our Hyundai i30 N TCR customers. The series is one of the strongest national TCR championships, with good team representing a number of manufacturers. To be so strong throughout the season – with customers claiming the most pole positions and most race wins from the year – only underlines the quality of our customers and their drivers, and the performance of the car. That the i30 N TCR cars are built in Germany at Hyundai Motorsport headquarters in Alzenau, and that Hyundai Team Engstler work closely with our colleagues at Hyundai Germany only adds to the celebrations.”
