Driver’s maiden win highlights i30 N TCR performance in WTCR

Nicky Catsburg took his first win with the i30 N TCR at the FIA WTCR Race of Slovakia at the Slovakia Ring (October 9-11). The Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team driver was consistently running towards the front at the three-race meeting. After starting from the front row and leading early in damp conditions in Race 1 he was dominant in the final contest to claim victory – also setting fastest lap. Earlier in the day Gabriele Tarquini took third for BRC Hyundai N Lukoil Squadra Corse in Race 1.

The following week (October 16-18) at Hungaroring defending WTCR winner Norbert Michelisz took his i30 N TCR to the fastest lap in both Race 1 and Race 2 – taking a best result of sixth place in the second encounter. His teammate Tarquini, and Luca Engstler also took top ten results from the weekend where Nico Gruber and José Manuel Sapag made their WTCR debuts in cars run by Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team and Target Competition respectively.

Huttunen heads R5 runners with strong run in Sardinia

Jari Huttunen finished an excellent eighth overall on Rally Italia Sardegna (October 8-11), claiming not only his second WRC 3 win of the season, but also the best result of any of the R5 crews entered on the rally. Though the Hyundai Poland Racing driver was only the fastest R5 runner on one stage during the event his consistency in avoiding mistakes, and the reliability of his i20 R5, allowed him to build a comfortable margin at the top of the category, eventually beating his nearest rival by well over a minute. The result allowed him to narrow the gap at the top the WRC 3 standings to just 2 points, with the points’ leader having completed one more round than Huttunen.

In WRC 2 Ole Christian Veiby picked up points for second place – after setting the best R5 time through two stages – as he finished fifth of the R5 runners. Hyundai Italia supported driver Umberto Scandola finished the event as the eighth best R5 entrant.

The same weekend Turk’s fellow Team Hyundai Slovenija driver Luca Rossetti ended Rallye Elba on the overall podium and as the best of the R5 runner on the event. Running against not only other crews in similar spec machinery, but also competing against former WRC cars Rossetti and Manuel Fenoli were fastest of all on two of the three stages on the opening day to lead overall. Hyundai Motorsport Customer Racing Operations Leader Andrew Johns said: “It is always very nice to see our customers winning races, and even more so when it happens with such a wide range of teams and in so many different championship. In recent weeks we’ve seen Nicky Catsburg’s win in FIA WTCR and Jari Huttunen’s in WRC 3. We also witnessed, wins for teams supported by Hyundai subsidiaries in Poland and the USA, as well as in TCR Germany, and the TCR UK title clinched by a small, family-run team running with the i30 N TCR. All of this points to – of course – strong cars, but also the excellent support from the Customer Racing department to make this season as successful as possible, despite the obstacles we have all faced.”
