AFRIQUIA RENEWS RACE OF MOROCCO PARTNERSHIP AS NEW WTCR – FIA WORLD TOURING CAR CUP BEGINS IN MARRAKECH

*Prestigious inaugural event backed by Morocco’s leading fuel station operator
*Local hero Bennani begins title quest in Sébastien Loeb Racing Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR
*Live domestic and international TV coverage for Marrakech street spectacular
*Fun-filled weekend of entertainment for all the family

History will be made in Marrakech from 7-8 April when Circuit Moulay El Hassan hosts the opening event of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO. And AFRIQUIA, Morocco’s leading fuel station operator, has renewed its support of the Race of Morocco weekend by signing up as Event Presenting Partner.

WTCR is the new name for the FIA World Touring Car Championship from 2018 when new technical rules will also be introduced. The WTCC first visited Marrakech in 2009 and helped to turn Mehdi Bennani into a national hero. And Bennani will be on the packed grid of WTCR drivers, which include multiple world champion Yvan Muller – who returns to Morocco after a one-year absence – and Rob Huff, winner of the first world touring car race in Marrakech nearly 10 seasons ago.

And the entertainment doesn’t end with the World Touring Car Cup, which will be contested over three rather than two races – one on Saturday and two on Sunday.

The Moroccan ASN, FRMSA, has signed up more than 45 drivers for the support races, while off-track the paddock will be live and kicking with entertainment for all the family. Activities include a karting track, hot laps, 5D simulators, autograph sessions and music. There’s also a food court, kids’ zone and much, much more.

François Ribeiro, Head of Eurosport Events, promoter of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup presented by OSCARO, said: “The Race of Morocco weekend is more than a motorsport event, it’s a festival of family entertainment and the perfect occasion to start the first WTCR season. We are delighted that AFRIQUIA has renewed as Event Presenting Partner and also very pleased that the enthusiastic Moroccan fans will have a home hero to cheer in Mehdi Bennani, a top level driver with a genuine chance of winning.”

Part of the Akwa Group, AFRIQUIA will benefit from significant trackside branding, inclusion of its name in the official event title, plus numerous promotional opportunities – such as live national and international TV coverage. More information and ticket details at www.marrakechgrandprix.com.
