Nicky Catsburg set for 24 Hours of Le Mans debut with BMW
After a successfully completing the opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, Nicky Catsburg and BMW TEAM MTEK head to France for the biggest race of the season – the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Nicky finished eighth last time out at Spa-Francorchamps with a reliable run from the new BMW M8 GTE. Since then Nicky has tested extensively and he, teammates Martin Tomczyk and Philipp Eng are looking forward to the greatest challenge in motorsport.
“Of course, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the highlights of the season and for me it will be my first time participating in this event,” Nicky said. “I am really looking forward to finally crossing this event off my list. To be able to do it with the brand-new BMW M8 GTE as a BMW factory driver, with the personal support of KTO and Prosperity Investment Management, is something I am proud of.”
Ahead of the big race, testing took place last Sunday at Circuit de la Sarthe where Nicky and teammate Tomczyk put in an impressive tally of 83 laps. Nicky proved quickest in the test with the eighth fastest time in the ultra-competitive LMGTE Pro class.
“The test day went really well, the car is performing the way it should and I feel we are really well prepared,” Nicky continued. “We are lacking a bit of pace compared to some of the competition but I am sure we will still be able to fight for a good result.
“Working with Martin and Phillip is great, I know them both well and that really helps for an event like this. We have worked on our driver changes and found a setup which we all like.
“The season has not been easy so far with a difficult race in Spa. In Le Mans we obviously want to finish but we also want to fight for the top spot, this is always a bit of a trade-off which makes 24-Hour races as good as they are!”
