A podium in Barcelona closes the gap in the Michelin Le Mans Cup for Nielsen’s Wells and Noble

Another well-deserved podium for Tony Wells and Colin Noble in the Michelin Le Mans Cup, backed up with a top ten finish for the Nielsen ran Grainmarket Racing entry of Alex Mortimer and Mark Crader, saw both Nielsen entries firm up their respective championship positions in Barcelona (20th July 2019).

Wells took the start from third on the grid after Noble’s earlier qualifying run; and was unlucky in traffic before managing a full course yellow, dropping the car to the back of the leading cars. The stint, however, was a strong one and he handed over the Norma to Colin in third place.

The charge started, reeling in his nearest rival car. However, the job was made easier as he served a drive-through penalty, promoting the Scot to second place at the chequered flag. The result has elevated the pairing into third place in the championship.

Additionally, the gap in the teams’ championship to Lanan Racing decreased, after the rivals failed to start the race following a terrifying accident in practice on Friday.

The Grainmarket car suffered an early spin in the hands of Crader but recovered well in ninth place to cement eighth place in the championship with just three rounds remaining.

Colin Noble

“We had a lot of good pace and had a trouble-free run to P2. Maybe we could have taken the win, but we lost a bit of time early in the race which made it difficult, but another podium and good points made it a good result.”

Tony Wells

“I’m happy with the day’s work and another trophy. We drove well as a pair and the team did a good job. We are still in with a chance of the championship, but really we need to win next time out in Spa to put the pressure on our rivals ahead.” "
