Ferrari F40 at 1:18 scale

The long awaited further batch of our 1:18 scale Ferrari F40s are close to completion and are now available to pre-order.  After being hand-cast, fettled, painted and meticulously assembled, these precise scale recreations undergo a rigorous quality control process by our model makers to ensure the details perfectly match those on the prototype model, which has itself undergone detailed scrutiny by the design and engineering teams at Ferrari.

Created in 1987, the F40 continued the extreme machine philosophy cultivated by its predecessor the (288) GTO, but took it to new levels. Ferrari wanted it to be "very fast, sporting in the extreme, and spartan" for the most enthusiastic of owners who wanted "nothing but sheer performance.”. The sleek mid-engined berlinetta was famed for its extreme lack of weight: it possessed no driver aids or creature comforts, the paint spray was so thin that the weave of the Kevlar body was visible through the coat; and Lexan was used for the rear and side windows instead of glass. This utter devotion to minimising weight achieved a kerbside figure of around 1300 kg for the car, which combined with a 471 brake horsepower, 2.9 litre twin-turbocharged V8 power unit, meant the car had a tremendous power-to-weight ratio of over 400 bhp/ton.

Enzo told the assembled crowd of journalists at the car's unveiling: “I expressed my wish to the engineers: build a car to be the best in the world. And now the car is here." It was to be the last vehicle to be personally introduced by Enzo himself. The F40 launched for approximately $400,000 USD. It would easily fetch $1.5 million now.

It was unsurprisingly greeted with massive enthusiasm, and the number of examples built vastly exceeded the initial estimates of 400, with 1311 cars eventually being delivered.
