Renger van der Zande takes IMSA Endurance Cup title

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship concluded Saturday with the Twelve Hours of Sebring which saw Renger van der Zande and #10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R teammates Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon wrap up the Michelin Endurance Cup, whilst just missing out on the overall IMSA championship.
In what was a highly successful season, Renger fought right to the end, but ultimately lost out to eventual championship winners Helio Castroneves and Ricky Taylor in the #7 Acura.

The pivotal moment of the race came just before the five-hour mark when Dixon was hit by the #77 Mazda. Having lost five laps for repairs, the driver trio went on to finish in seventh position. Eventual champions Castroneves and Taylor meanwhile were eighth, but still claimed the title by one point.

The Endurance title, consisting of the longer endurance events at Rolex 24 at Daytona, Road Atlanta and Sebring, did however fall to Renger and his team, taking the championship honours six points clear of his nearest rival off the back of his wins at both Daytona and Road Atlanta.

“It was a tough day,” Renger stated. “I believe we had everything today to make the championship happen and we finished second. I can’t be happy with that, but we won the Michelin Endurance Cup, so at least we’re going home with a trophy and second in the championship.

“I want to say thank you to the team and for being part of Wayne Taylor Racing for three years. It’s been an amazing time and we’ve had some big wins that I will remember for the rest of my life. There is a fantastic group of people that work very closely together and that’s something that I will remember forever and thank you to the team for all their effort.”
