Chicherit and Marklund to take fight to series regulars in Germany

The 2022 FIA World Rallycross Championship reaches its conclusion at Germany’s famous Nürburgring this weekend (12-13 November) – with two new names on the entry list as a champion is rewarded and an icon returns.

The biggest talking-point in the build-up to the season finale has been the forthcoming competitive debut of GCK Motorsport’s Lancia Delta Evo-e RX, based upon the legendary Lancia Delta Integrale. On its eagerly-awaited series bow, the car will be piloted by four-time World Freeriding Champion and experienced rallycross racer Guerlain Chicherit, who reached the final in his most recent World RX appearance at the Nürburgring last year.

Another new addition to the all-electric World Championship grid will be Anton Marklund, who similarly last competed in the top flight this time 12 months ago. The Swede – the dominant force in the FIA European Rallycross Championship’s headlining Euro RX1 tier this season and four times a previous podium-finisher in World RX – will take to the track in ALL-INKL.COM Muennich Motorsport’s SEAT Ibiza, as he targets a full-time return to the international pinnacle of the sport.

Chicherit and Marklund, however, will face some pretty stiff opposition at the Nürburgring, led by Volkswagen Dealerteam BAUHAUS’ Johan Kristoffersson, who cemented his fifth Drivers’ championship in style in Catalunya just over a week ago. Fired-up following his Saturday disappointment in Spain, the Swede lapped a full second quicker than any of his rivals in Sunday’s SuperPole session in Barcelona – and now the title is safely in the bag, anything is possible.

Fellow world champion Timmy Hansen manoeuvred himself into pole position to clinch the runner-up spoils in the standings by outscoring the rest of the field in Catalunya. As he returns to the circuit where last season, he agonisingly lost out on a second career crown on countback, the Hansen World RX Team ace is determined to end the campaign on a high.

Behind the 2019 title-holder, there is a tense three-way scrap for third place in the overall table between Niclas Grönholm, Kevin Hansen and Ole Christian Veiby. Grönholm – now racing for Construction Equipment Dealer Team – was a winner in Germany last year, with the younger Hansen brother following him home. Veiby arguably has the fastest car of the three at his disposal, but has suffered from a run of ill-fortune in recent rounds that he hopes is now in the past.

Impressive teenager Gustav Bergström has rarely been far from the pace of his illustrious team-mates Kristoffersson and Veiby in a third Volkswagen RX1e – reaching the rostrum on three consecutive occasions in Belgium and Spain – while fellow rookie Klara Andersson returned to the final in Catalunya. The Swede won a heat at the Nürburgring in the FIA RX2e Championship in 2021, and has her sights set on a repeat of her Portuguese podium this weekend.

In the supporting Euro RX3 series, Kobe Pauwels – much like Kristoffersson in World RX – will be let off the leash with the championship already secured, but his rivals similarly have designs on a victory celebration. While the Belgian will unquestionably be tough to beat, fellow Audi drivers Damian Litwinowicz, João Ribeiro, Nuno Miguel da Costa Araújo and Nils Volland, as well as Škoda star Jan Černý are all eager to open their winning accounts for 2022 before the final curtain falls.

All of the action both on and off-track will be broadcast live on RX+, providing access to every race live or on-demand on any device with premium production, hundreds of hours of fast-paced content and exclusive behind-the-scenes insights, plus interviews, in-depth expert analysis, drone shots, on-board cameras, highlights and much more.

RX+ event passes are available for €7,99, with the full season pass now on sale for the discounted rate of €29,99. More information can be found here, and race weekend tickets can still be purchased here.
