Red-hot racing anticipated on Hungary’s World Championship debut

Following a sensational season-opener in Sweden, the all-action FIA World Rallycross Championship is headed for Hungary this weekend (27-28 July), as Nyirád’s famous ‘Red Cauldron’ prepares to stage the second intriguing instalment in the new ‘Battle of Technologies’.

Five-time world champion Johan Kristoffersson leads the standings after launching his quest for an extraordinary sixth career crown with a commanding double triumph in the curtain-raising contest at Höljes.

The Swede is setting the pace for the sustainably-fuelled combustion contingent behind the wheel of his KMS – HORSE Powertrain-run Volkswagen Polo KMS 601 RX, but he has never raced at Nyirád before, and has a number of electric-powered rivals in hot pursuit.

CE Dealer Team by Volvo Construction Equipment duo Klara Andersson and Niclas Grönholm are tied for second place in the points table after claiming a runner-up finish apiece in Sweden. The former was particularly impressive as she came within a whisker of pipping Kristoffersson to victory on the opening day, registering her finest result to-date in World RX in the process.

Andersson and Grönholm tested at Nyirád in the FIA RX2e Championship’s ZEROID X1 car earlier this year, and will be hoping to translate that recent experience into a successful weekend.

Kristoffersson’s team-mate Ole Christian Veiby is right behind the CE Dealer Team pairing in fourth, having battled back from a stall at the start of Sunday’s final at Höljes to ascend the podium for the eighth time in his career at the highest level – though the Norwegian remains in search of his first win.

Hansen World RX Team endured a disappointing weekend on home soil in Sweden, with neither Timmy nor Kevin Hansen reaching the rostrum in the Peugeot 208 RX1e, but the brothers – like their father, 14-time European Champion Kenneth Hansen – have both prevailed at Nyirád in the past, and are eager to do so again.

Former Hungarian Rallycross Champion Jankó Wieszt is a new addition to the grid, racing an ex-GCK Renault Mégane RS RX – a car not seen in the World Championship since 2021. The 29-year-old will be aiming to exploit his local knowledge around an old-school circuit that is unique on the calendar, with its ‘Red Cauldron’ nickname stemming from the distinctive colour of its unsealed surfaces, having been built on the site of a disused bauxite quarry.

Characterised by technical curves and dramatic elevation changes, Nyirád welcomed the FIA European Rallycross Championship from 2006 to 2013 before rejoining the Euro RX schedule in 2022 following a near decade-long absence. This weekend marks Hungary’s World Championship debut.

In addition to a double-header of unmissable World RX action, Kárai Trans World RX of Hungary will play host to the second round of the 2024 RX2e, Euro RX1 and Euro RX3 campaigns, with no fewer than 18 homegrown heroes entered across the board and the non-stop thrills set to be broadcast live on the pioneering Rally.TV platform.
