Double Brands Hatch success keeps TF Sport firmly in British GT Championship fight

TF Sport’s victory and podium in GT3 and GT4 respectively brought a welcome championship boost at its home circuit of Brands Hatch. The result ensures that the team remains firmly in the hunt for both classes of the British GT Championship heading to the season finale at Donington Park next month.

Graham Davidson and Jonny Adam’s second victory together this season in the #47 Aston Vantage GT3 V8 elevated the pairing to second in the standings while in the GT4 category another fighting drive from Ash Hand and Tom Canning in the #97 entry took them to the top of the GT4 standings with one round remaining.

The win was hard-fought following various setup tweaks during the two hours of Saturday practice. The rapid-fire qualifying sessions came quick and fast with Graham and Jonny pulling out a time quick enough for a second row start. On the other side of the garage in the #2, Mark Farmer and Nicki Thiim endured a tougher run and had to be content with 13th position.

The race saw Graham make a great getaway from the rolling start to vault second behind the #96 Aston Martin. The Donington winner maintained pressure on the car ahead before a spin from the leader provided Graham with welcome clear air at the front.

From this point he was able to pull a margin before pitting mid-distance for Jonny. With the victory there for the beckoning, the three-time champion maintained the pace at the front of the field to record the win by six seconds from his nearest rival. The result means that just six points separate the duo from the current championship leader.

Things were difficult for Mark and Nicki, the former suffering couple of off-track moments heading into the race. Starting outside the top ten on a track like Brands Hatch is always difficult, but Mark duly steered clear of trouble to hand the #2 over to Nicki. Despite his best efforts, the Dane – whilst enjoying the battle - had to settle with seventh position on this occasion.
Jonny Adam #47
“That was a really important race for us and it’s great to get maximum points for the championship for which will again be another Donington Decider. We go there with great momentum even if the only negative is that we have the success penalty, so we’re looking forward to it and we’ll give our all.”
Nicki Thiim #2
“Not our weekend but what an awesome track – the second-best track after Oulton Park – I really loved it but it’s always hard to overtake here, but we had fun in a large group of cars and there is now just one round to go!”
Tom Canning and Ash Hand carried forward their momentum from the Spa-Francorchamps victory to claim a front-row start in the GT4 class in the distinctive #97 car, while the #95 pairing of Patrick Kibble and Josh Price were a sold sixth.

The TF Sport crew worked incredibly hard to rectify a fuel issue on the #97 on Sunday morning and after starting a fine second, Ash soon took the class lead and maintained a small margin over the cars behind. However, additional pitstop time courtesy of their first win together last time out meant that Tom resumed the race in seventh position. Another spirited drive followed, as he worked his way up the order to fourth at the chequered flag and this became third once the official results were declared. With 22.5 points added to the tally, Ash and Tom now lead the Silver GT4 standings by 8.5 points.

Very much in the reckoning, TF Sport now prepares for the British GT Championship season finale at Donington Park next month.
Tom Canning  #97
“It was a pretty good race even if the 20 second penalty made life hard for us in taking away the lead. We did manage to work our way back up to fourth position at the end and were closing in on the car ahead at a second a lap. It was still very positive as we later moved P3 and we go into the final race at Donington with the belief that the Championship is there for the taking!”
TF Sport Director, Tom Ferrier
“Both championships are going down to the wire which is always our plan,  to make sure we’re set for the Donington Decider, that’s great – we needed that in GT3. It will be a tough challenge but we’re in it and that’s the main thing. GT4 was good with some very fired up young drivers and for those in the battle it was a great result.”
