DRAGON RACING COMMITS SIX CARS FOR THE INAUGURAL GULF SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP

UAE motorsport operation Dragon Racing 88 has announced its commitment to enter the first edition of the Gulf Sportscar Championship, with six cars expected to join the grid come the season's first round in November 2018.

The respected UAE-based team is the largest and leading racing organisation within the GCC, with a race-winning pedigree including class wins in the UAE's two largest endurance races - the Dubai 24 Hours and the Gulf 12 Hours - plus additional victories in the local national racing series, and the F4UAE Championship with its multi-car openwheeler operation.

Based at a state-of-the-art, 20,000 square feet workshop at the Dubai Autodrome, Dragon Racing has committed to entering a Ferrari 488 GT3, as Ferrari 488 Challenge, a Porsche Cayman GT4, plus three other cars to be announced prior to the season's first round.

“For a long time now, Dragon Racing has been pushing for a well promoted and professionally managed GT and sportscar racing series in the region, and in the new Gulf Sportscar Championship it looks like we finally have one," said Leon Price, Chairman of Dragon Racing.

"Driving Force Events has created an attractive championship appealing to established teams, yet at the same time offering an accessible route into GT racing for less experienced teams and drivers alike. Carefully coordinated around both the Gulf 12 Hours and the Dubai 24 Hours, we hope that many European teams will take the opportunity to stay on in the UAE and enjoy racing in the Middle East whilst Europe hibernates over the winter months.

"As we have done with the F4UAE Championship, Dragon Racing fully supports this new initiative and we look forward to running our established GT3 machinery and soon to be announced GT4-type cars in the new Gulf Sportscar Championship,” concluded Price.

The Gulf Sportscar Championship is open to GT cars, LMP3 cars (under ACO licence) and a selection of carbon-monocoque prototypes, with entrants able to run either a single driver or two-driver entry per car. The calendar includes ten 50-minute races over five weekends at the Dubai Autodrome and Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi between November 2018 and February 2019.

The final classification will be determined by the best six results of each entrant over the 10-round season – where the lowest four finishing positions will be dropped scores.

All teams who enter at least one car in the Gulf Sportscar Championship will also be entitled to a discounted entry package in the Gulf 12 Hours event at Yas Marina Circuit on December 15, 2018.

More information about the Gulf Sportscar Championship will be released in the coming weeks.
