Ice hockey team EHC Red Bull Munich officially inaugurated its new SAP Garden home arena on Friday evening with an historic game against the NHL's Buffalo Sabres and a parade of celebrities including pole vault world record holder Armand "Mondo" Duplantis, who conducted the symbolic honorary bully with DEL record coach Don Jackson. Here is all you need to know:
- SAP Garden was completed this summer on the site of the former Radstadion - which was demolished in 2015 - and is home to EHC Red Bull Munich as well as basketball team Bayern Munich.
- Among the 10,796 spectators in the sold-out sports arena on the night were Joachim Herrmann (Bavarian State Minister of the Interior, for Sport and Integration) and Dieter Reiter (Lord Mayor of the City of Munich) who saw German Red Bull Junior Team star Tim Tramnitz of Formula 3 fame hand the puck to Duplantis and Jackson to celebrate the beginning of the "2024 NHL Global Series Challenge Germany presented by Fastenal".
- The four-time Deutsche Eishockey Liga champions were up against it from the start of the game with goaltender Mathias Niederberger doing well to keep out winger Jordan Greenway, amongst others.
- After Tobias Rieder put a shot past the post for the home team, the honour of the first goal at SAP Garden went to Sabres centre Sam Lafferty whose deflected eighth-minute shot got past Niederberger.
- Tage Thompson, one of the Buffalo captains, made it 2-0 before the first break with Canadian Adam Brooks going close for Munich soon after as they lifted the packed crowd with a period of sustained pressure.
- JJ Peterka and Ryan McLeod then went close for the away team before Dylan Cozens kept his stick in at the second post on the power play to make it 3-0 with Jack Quinn's solo effort making it 4-0 four minutes later.
- Munich coach Toni Söderholm brought in German goaltender Simon Wolf for the final period and he made several good saves, however could not keep out Peterka's cleverly placed shot in the 44th minute.
- After the 5-0 game, as is customary in the NHL, the "Three Stars of the Game" were chosen with goaltender Niederberger rewarded for his impressive showing alongside visiting stars Thompson and Peterka.
- Other famous guests on the night included German football legend Lothar Matthäus and Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller as well as the club's honorary president Uli Hoeneß and president Herbert Hainer.
- Christian Winkler (Managing Director Sports Red Bull Ice Hockey) said: "We imagined the Grand Opening to be wonderful and that's exactly what happened. To see the hall full - pure goosebumps! Today, everyone goes home with a smile. We want to experience many festive days here."
- Finnish coach Söderholm added: "We have been waiting for this day for a very long time. Today, two great teams with good characters met. It was a very nice experience." |
