On the race circuits Lewis Kent finished the TCR UK year with victory in his Veloster N TCR, while drivers with the Elantra N TCR and i30 N TCR completed their own seasons in regional and national competition with strong results.

Superb performance gives Hyundai Motorsport crew WRC2 win in Spain

Hyundai Motorsport WRC2 driver Teemu Suninen continued the superb recent form for i20 N Rally2 customers in the championship with a dominant win at Rally de España (October 20-23). The Finn took the lead at the end of the opening loop on Friday and held the position through the end of the event. He and co-driver Mikko Markkula topped the RC2 runners on eight of the competitive stages and finished a strong eleventh overall on a rally that saw crews have to contend with changing weather as well as the tarmac stages.

His team-mate Fabrizio Zaldivar finished eighth in the main WRC2 class – fourth of those competing for WRC2 Junior honours, where Customer Racing Junior Drivers Josh McErlean and Grégoire Munster came home eighth and ninth respectively. Also impressive, on his debut in a Rally2 car, was Irishman William Creighton, who took his PCRS-run i20 N Rally2 to 29th overall after frequently matching the pace of the more established crews.

Podium place secures Polish title for Swedish crew

A controlled drive to second place on Rally Košice (October 21-23) clinched the Polish rally championship title for Kowax 2BRally Racing crew Tom Kristensson and Andreas Johansson. The Swedish i20 R5 duo started the final round with a healthy lead, which allowed them to manage their pace throughout. They held a podium place overall for the full duration of the event and achieved a pair of top times on the final two stages to make sure they secured the necessary points to cap a superb debut season as Hyundai customers.

Podium finish completes Dutch season for i20 R5 pairing

i20 R5 driver Bob de Jong finished the Dutch Rally Championship with a second place on the stages of the Twente Rally (October 15-16). A consistent run through the event put he and co-driver Erik de Wild in the top five on every one of the weekend’s tarmac stages on their way to equaling their best finish of the season.

They led four Hyundai Motorsport customer crews in the top ten. i20 N Rally2 crew Kevin van Deijne and Hein Verschuuren finished fourth after a strong run of their own, while drivers Jan van Gerven and Martin van Iersel brought their respective i20 R5 home in seventh and ninth overall.

Dominant win seals national title in Slovenia

Hyundai Slovenia-supported i20 N Rally2 crew Rok Turk and Blanka Kacin clinched their sixth consecutive national rally title after a dominant win at the Rally Soča Valley (October 14-16). The pair won all seven stages on the event, heading a Hyundai customer 1-2 on each occasion ahead of i20 R5 driver Marko Grossi. Grossi would finish second overall, but could not prevent Turk and Kacin from beginning their title celebrations with one round still remaining.

The victory, which came with a near 90-second margin was their sixth of the season and confirmed their first national crown driving a Friulmotor-prepared i20 N Rally2 after winning the previous three years with i20 R5 run by the Italian squad.

Local driver takes Mull Rally win on i20 R5 debut

In his first start at the wheel of an i20 R5 Paul MacKinnon scored a fantastic overall victory on the Mull Rally (October 14-16), in the car’s first start on the 50th running of the Scottish island’s event. He won more than half of grueling tarmac stage, putting his local knowledge to good use to build an advantage ahead of a final loop – including a 50km challenge that became the longest in the history of the event – conducted in darkness on Saturday night.

MacKinnon and co-driver Paul Beaton had to manage their pace through the final competitive runs of the weekend, but their earlier pace had given them enough of a margin to hold on for the overall victory.

Elantra N TCR drivers take top ten finishes from TCR Europe finale

Elantra N TCR customer team Target Competition clinched second in the teams’ standings at the final round of the TCR Europe season at the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona (October 14-16). Top tens in both races from Nicola Baldan, as well as a stunning performance from the back of the grid to ninth in Race 1 by Josh Files, who himself secured third in the drivers’ points, helped the Italian squad to the runners-up position.

There were also final round top tens for Customer Racing Junior Driver Jáchym Galáš – who, in sixth in his Janík Motorsport entry, led the Elantra N TCR runner in Race 1 and Spanish driver Pepe Oriola for Team Aggressive Italia. Alejandro Geppert, Oriola’s countryman scored a best finish of 11th on his debut in TCR Europe for Teo Martin Motorsport.

Hyundai customers finish TCR UK campaign with a win

Lewis Kent finished the TCR UK season with a near-perfect performance in the final race of the year at Snetterton (October 23). The Veloster N TCR driver made a great start from the second row of the grid and took the lead half way round the opening lap. He then held the lead – keeping a buffer between him and the closest chasers – as the wet track began to dry in the closing laps.

The Essex & Kent Motorsport driver had taken seventh in Race 1 and clinched third in the final points – the best placed of the Hyundai customers in the standings. He team-mate – and younger brother – Brad finished the year with fifth in the final race, one spot behind Area Motorsport’s Alex Ley. Bruce Winfield made his Hyundai debut in another of the four i30 N TCR run by the team and claimed a pair of top tens. Andy Wilmot – another from the Area stable – was able to clinch the Diamond Trophy title.

Podium for i30 N TCR driver on TCR Germany final weekend

Nordpass i30 N TCR driver Jonas Karklys was the best Hyundai entrants in both races of the TCR Germany finale at Hockenheim (October 21-23). The Lithuanian was third in Race 1 – at the head of a train of Hyundai runners in the results with ROJA Motorsport team-mates Rene Kircher, Tim Rölleke and Robin Jahr fourth, fifth and sixth.

Karklys was fifth in the final encounter of the season, again leading Kircher and Rölleke in the final results. Patrick Sing was eighth in his i30 N TCR.

i30 N TCR driver takes dominant win in Italian Endurance event

Next Motorsport’s Adriano Visdomini took victory in the 55-minute Coppa Italia Turismo Endurance race at Mugello (October 15-16). The i30 N TCR driver took pole position from qualifying, where he was the only runner to set a lap time below the 2-munite barrier. This same speed was on show during the race itself. After a brief challenge from those behind in the opening laps Visdomini pulled away and led for much of the race, only temporarily giving up the top spot during the mid-race sequence of pitstops, before retaking the lead when the last of his competitors made their call to pit lane.

He won overall by four seconds, with Matteo Visdomini and Alberto de Ambroggi sharing another i30 N TCR to seventh position.

Hyundai Motorsport Deputy Team Director Julien Moncet said: “Our customers can rightly be proud of their recent results. Teemu Suninen was excellent on Rally de España to give the i20 N Rally2 a second consecutive WRC2 win, with Fabrizio Zaldivar, Josh McErlean and Grégoire Munster all showing great pace from their respective entries on the event. Customers continue to prove the strength of the i20 R5, with Tom Kristensson adding another national title to the model’s list of successes after a great run in the final round in Poland. In TCR competition too, teams and drivers with Hyundai Motorsport built cars scored great results to finish the seasons in regional and national series. Lewis Kent’s finale win in TCR UK driving the Veloster N TCR is the obvious highlight, but there were also strong performances from Elantra N TCR drivers in TCR Europe and i30 N TCR runners in TCR Germany.”
