Hyundai Motorsport customer results round-up bulletin

  • Fantastic results on the final weekend of the season at Vallelunga secured the TCR Italy title for Target Competition Elantra N TCR driver Niels Langeveld
  • Customer Racing Junior Driver Jáchym Galáš returned to the TCR Europe podium as he finished second in wet conditions in Race 1 of the series’ outing at Monza
  • Hyundai Slovenia-supported i20 N Rally2 driver Rok Turk took overall victory on Rally Nova Gorica after a dramatic end to the rally in difficult conditions.

Niels Langeveld clinched the first drivers’ title in TCR national competition with the Elantra N TCR after a superb weekend at Vallelunga. More customers remain in contention for the crowns in TCR Europe and TCR Australia after strong performances in the penultimate rounds of both championships. On rally stages, Rok Turk remains on course to successfully defend his Slovenian national title after taking overall victory on Rally Nova Gorica, while the Hyundai España-supported Pepe López added to his Spanish Superchampionship lead with another podium in his i20 N Rally2.

Superb finale weekend secures TCR Italy title

Niels Langeveld finished the TCR Italy season at Vallelunga (September 16-18) with his best weekend of the year to help clinch the 2022 title in dramatic fashion. Entering the finale nearly 40 points adrift of his title rival the Target Competition Elantra N TCR driver had already cut into that advantage by the end of qualifying by scoring pole position.

A dominant, lights-to-flag win gave him his fourth victory of the season in Race 1, despite twice having to protect the lead on a restart after incidents called the Safety Car into action. The 40 points for the win, as well as the previous points’ leader receiving a post-race penalty, lifted Langeveld into the lead of the championship for the first time in the year.

From eighth on the partly reversed grid for Race 2 he made an excellent start as he sought to keep his rival behind him to clinch the title. By the end of the opening lap Langeveld had already moved up to fourth. His only competition for the title crashed out trying to chase him down during the early laps. Through the remainder of the contest Langeveld kept smartly clear of incidents that unfolded around him to cross the line in fourth. This became third after the race, making the weekend the only one of the campaign where he stood on the podium both Saturday and Sunday.

Junior Driver returns to TCR Europe podium in wet weather Race 1

Janík Motorsport’s Customer Racing Junior Driver Jáchym Galáš mastered the wet conditions in Race 1 of the TCR Europe weekend at Monza (September 23-25) to return to the podium in his Elantra N TCR. The Czech driver finished second, despite losing a spot on the opening lap. The best of the Hyundai entries early in the race was Nicola Baldan, the Target Competition man at his home round of the series. From second on the grid Baldan took the lead on the opening lap, holding the top spot for the first half of the contest before slipping back to fourth – one spot ahead of team-mate Josh Files. Pepe Oriola and Felice Jelmini also finished in the top ten in their Elantra N TCR, in seventh and tenth respectively.

Baldan was fourth again in Race 2 – run on a dry track – despite being given a five second penalty. On this occasion he was classified just ahead of i30 N TCR runner Michele Imberti, who scored fifth on his debut weekend in the championship. From fifth on the grid the Italian held the position throughout the race to take an excellent finish. Files and Oriola met the chequered flag in ninth and tenth.

Files will start the final round of the season with a mathematical chance of the title.

Consistent weekend keeps i30 N TCR driver in TCR Australia title fight

After scoring top ten finishes in all three races at Sandown Raceway (September 16-18) Josh Buchan remains in contention for the TCR Australia title ahead of the season finale. Over a weekend marked by very wet conditions that played a part in each on-track encounter, the i30 N TCR driver started with a fifth place before retrieving eighth place from Race 2 after a last lap run in the some of the worst weather of the weekend during which several cars went off or lost time to contact on circuit.

He completed the meeting with his best finish of the meeting – fourth – after taking the position with two laps left to stay in touch with the points’ leader with only the series’ second visit to the Bathurst circuit left on the calendar.

His HMO Customer Racing teammate Bailey Sweeny scored two top tens of his own – in Race 1 and Race 3 – the latter coming despite losing time sliding through the mud after contact from a competitor.

Hyundai drivers end TCR Germany weekend with Race 2 podium

Jonas Karklys ended the TCR Germany meeting at the Sachsenring (September 23-25) with a visit to the podium after finishing third in Race 2. The i30 N TCR driver had taken fifth in Race 1, one spot behind ROJA Motorsport man Rene Kircher. The ROJA Motorsport team expanded to four cars for the event, with veteran Kai Jordan returning to the series and Tim Rölleke joining the line-up. Rölleke’s best result of his debut weekend came with an eighth in Race 1, while Jordan was ninth in Race 2 behind eighth placed Patrick Sing.
Overall victory for Hyundai Slovenia crew in latest national round

Hyundai Slovenia-backed i20 N Rally2 crew Rok Turk and Blanka Kacin came out on top of an exciting end to Rally Nova Gorica (September 22-25) to take overall victory. The pair were on the pace through the entire event. They won three stages on day one of the competition, but were still only third overnight.

They held their podium place through the opening loop on Sunday. However, on the penultimate stage their consistency was rewarded when they took the lead after benefitting from problems for those ahead in slippery conditions. The turnaround gave them victory overall by 45 seconds and put them one step closer to winning their first national title with the i20 N Rally2, and successfully defending their crown.

In an i20 R5 Marco Grossi completed the overall podium and finished second, behind Turk, of those scoring points for the Slovenian national championship.

Hyundai España crews take double podium from wet weekend

Pepe López and Iván Ares put their i20 N Rally2 on the overall podium at the end of a wet weekend at the Rallye Villa de Llanes (September 22-24). The tarmac event, the sixth round of the Spanish Superchampionship, was run in difficult conditions. However, both Hyundai España-supported drivers showed great pace to win four stages between them.

López narrowly missed out on victory after a superb final stage where he took over 20 seconds out of the leader’s advantage. However, his second placed result still allowed him to extend his lead at the top of the championship with two rounds now remaining in the season. Ares, meanwhile was superbly consistent to pick up his third podium of the campaign. Surhayen Pernía added a third i20 N Rally2 into the final top six to complete a strong weekend for Hyundai customers in the event.

Junior Driver dominates latest Paraguayan event with i20 N Rally2

Customer Racing Junior Driver Fabrizio Zaldivar dominated the latest round of the Super Prime championship – la Revancha del Desafio (September 18) – in his i20 N Rally2. The Paraguayan set the fastest time on all four passes of the stage during the main event to take a slot in the head-to-head finale. Once more he was quickest in both of the two runs to decide the victor, outpacing his competitor by a combined 20 seconds.

Consistent weekend ends with fourth place for i20 R5 pair

i20 R5 driver James Williams finished fourth on Trackrod Rally Yorkshire (September 23-24) as he and co-driver Dai Roberts continued their British Rally Championship season. On the gravel event the pair were consistently in the top group on each stage, while also improving their pace through the weekend. They ended the rally with the second fastest time on the final test to confirm their finishing position.
i20 N Rally2 pairing take sixth in Netherlands

i20 N Rally2 driver Kevin van Deijne ended the Hellendoorn Rally (September 16-17) as the best of the Hyundai Motorsport customers at the stages. Alongside co-driver Hein Vershuuren he finished sixth overall on the event – the longest rally in the Dutch national championship so far this season – despite some minor mechanical issues.

Through the first half of the rally i20 R5 crew Bob de Jong and Erik de Wild held third position overall, before their fine run ended on SS10 when they were caught out by the conditions and forced to retire.
Hyundai Motorsport Deputy Team Director Julien Moncet said: “We are now in a very important part of the season with some titles already decided – including the TCR Italy drivers’ championship for Niels Langeveld in the Hyundai Elantra N TCR – and other contests coming down to the final rounds. After the penultimate rounds in both series our customers in TCR Europe and TCR Australia will start the final race weekends with a chance of the title. It is the same story in rallying. Rok Turk took another step towards successfully defending his national title in Slovenia with another superb overall victory while consistent results for Pepe López in his i20 N Rally2 in Spain have added further to his lead in the points. Through our Customer Racing department, we continue to support all our customers in this pivotal few months to make sure that we have more to celebrate in the near future.”
