The winter break is approaching with the arrival of the festive season. Along with the sporting news, Kartcom Selection will take a break until the beginning of 2023. It is high time to put karting aside and focus on loved ones and give them the attention they deserve before starting a new year.
2022 was intense for karting enthusiasts, 2023 will be even more so. The international calendars have never been so full, which remains an indicator of the good health of our favourite sport, which has turned the page on the two years of the pandemic. High-level competition is doing well, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. For the amateurs, the balance sheet is not always so positive, although on the whole the situation is not too bad.
The CIK-FIA has finally turned its attention to the second part of the OK project launched in 2016 under the impetus of the then CIK-FIA vice-president Kees van de Grint. A much more accessible version, OK-N, has been presented for 2023 in national competitions with the help of several major manufacturers. Will this new formula take off? That is the big question. The answers will undoubtedly differ from country to country. It is indeed difficult to ignore the role of the professionals (distributors, dealers, teams) who are very well established in the major karting nations such as part of Europe and North America. It is quite understandable to expect them to defend their interests while hoping that their gaze will extend over a longer period than a year or two.
The thought of introducing more compact race formats is very interesting. It could involve other categories than just OK-N. Let's not just dream, kart racing will never be accessible to everyone, but it is nevertheless possible to increase its accessibility considerably. This will be one of the challenges of the years to come.
In a more general context, the importance of respecting the environment and the necessary concern for energy are legitimate concerns. However, the direction imposed, particularly in Europe, towards all-electricity in land transport seems both too brutal and not sufficiently well thought out. Other paths should be sought with more pragmatism. But this seems complicated when large-scale decisions have already been taken. We must encourage the ingenuity of the human brain and the inventiveness of a few pioneers to counteract the dictatorship of electricity, which risks leaving many of us behind.
